MOST VISITS TO CAMEROON ARE TROUBLE-FREE BUT VISITORS SHOULD REMAIN ALERT AT ALL TIMES.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
There has been an increase in violent crime. Car hijackings are frequent as are muggings. Douala, Yaounde and Kribi are most affected. Expatriates are especially vulnerable. Avoid carrying valuables or wearing jewellery in public. Take sensible precautions.
LOCAL TRAVEL
Armed robberies in the north of the country are common. If travelling between Maroua and the Chadian border, seek advice from the local police and be prepared to travel with a military escort. Overland travel out of Cameroon can be difficult. Vehicles are currently experiencing problems crossing the borders with Gabon and the Central African Republic. The border into the Republic of the Congo has been closed.
LOCAL LAWS AND CUSTOMS
Penalties for the use and possession of drugs are strict. Prison sentences are usual.
Visitors will be asked to produce their Yellow Fever vaccination certificate on arrival in the country. Failure to do so will result in a further vaccination being administered for which a charge is made.
